Frens Haringhandel
This little kiosk often comes back to my mind.
Is the food something mind-blowing? No. So why do I still think about it years later? Because, to me, it perfectly captures a certain idea of Amsterdam.
It’s a small kiosk overlooking the Singel canal, where you can stop for some typical Nordic ingredients in the simplest form: fresh fish, pickles, raw onion and bread. I had a herring sandwich and a shrimp sandwich.
The flavors are very fresh and, for my palate, almost strangely summery, the kind of thing you could imagine eating on a warm beach in Italy. But here the experience is completely different: you’re there, on the Singel bridge, with the Dutch wind hitting your face, the canal in front of you, and that sense of calm that only certain places in Northern Europe can give me.
I still remember the man with the walrus moustache who ordered just before me. He made me smile, and maybe he’s part of the reason why I have such a beautiful memory of this place.
