Venice, Food and Wine: Our Bacaro Tour

What is a bacaro tour? We travelled to Venice to discover one of the city’s most beautiful food traditions: small glasses of wine, called ombre, paired with cicchetti, little bites of food served in the city’s typical taverns, the bacari. From historic spots like Cantinone già Schiavi and Ca’ D’Oro alla Vedova, to the warmth of Da Lele, the contemporary approach of Vino Vero, and the view over the Squero di San Trovaso, this tour became a way to understand Venice beyond its postcard image. Along the way, we tried baccalà mantecato, meatballs, small sandwiches, natural wines, sarde in saor, and learned that a bacaro tour is not just about eating and drinking. It’s about conviviality, local rituals, and taking part in the city, one ombra at a time. A special thanks to our friend Martina, who shared some of her most precious Venetian spots with us.
