Croissants, Sourdough and Pompe à Huile: 3 Great Bakeries to Try in Marseille

Marseille has plenty of bakeries, from small neighborhood boulangeries to more artisanal spots focused on long fermentation and high-quality ingredients. Here are three bakeries to try, where you’re sure to find something you’ll love.

→ Pain Pan
→ Pompe
→ Pétrin Couchette

Pain Pan

⚲ 29 rue 3 frères Barthelemy, Marseille, France 13006

An artisanal bakery that bakes fresh products every day, with no compromises: organic, high-quality flours, long traditional processes, extended fermentation, and a real reverence for sourdough. The bakery offers a wide selection of breads and pastries to try. We visited the original location, but over time they’ve opened five more branches across the city. Interestingly, this flagship used to be an industrial bakery, they took over the space and completely transformed it.

We tried the pain suisse and a classic croissant. The pain suisse was super crispy, with all the puff pastry layers and a generous filling. The croissant was also excellent, made in a unique style: not light and airy like typical French croissants, but richer and denser. Of course, it depends on your preferred style, but we really enjoyed it and are always happy to try different approaches to classic pastries.

Pompe

⚲ 84 boulevard Vauban 13006 Marseille

Launched by Charlotte Crousillat, this bakery specializes in the famous pompe à huile, a traditional Provençal dessert made with olive oil. It comes in both sweet and savory versions, from cinnamon and gianduja pumps to breads with olives, rye, seeds, chestnuts, and zaatar.

Beyond their signature pompe à huile, you’ll find plenty of other sweet and savory options, both classic and modern, along with a wide selection of breads. The space is welcoming, with an industrial-style interior and a small outdoor terrace for those who prefer to sit outside. It’s a perfect spot for breakfast or a casual lunch.

During our visit, we tried the classic pompe à huile, a pain au chocolat, and a buttery croissant.

Pétrin Couchette

⚲ 7 Cours Saint-Louis, 13001 Marseille, France

Pétrin & Coucherette is a charming bakery and café in Marseille known for its artisanal approach to bread and pastries. The team focuses on high-quality ingredients and traditional techniques, delivering a delicious selection of both sweet and savory baked goods.

During our visit, we tried a brioche bun, a chocolate cookie, and an egg mayo sandwich. It’s a great spot for breakfast, a sweet treat, or a relaxing break. When you enter, the bakery’s open oven lets you watch the artisans at work, adding to the warm and inviting atmosphere.
