Street Food in Marseille: From Banh Mi to Michelin-Star Food Trucks

Marseille is a city where cultures, flavors, and traditions meet. From family-run bakeries to food trucks and market stalls, the street food scene reflects the city’s diverse identity and Mediterranean spirit. Here are some spots we recommend checking out.

Pain Pan

⚲ 29 rue 3 frères Barthelemy, Marseille, France 13006

An artisanal bakery that bakes fresh products every day, with no compromises: organic, high-quality flours, long traditional processes, extended fermentation, and a real reverence for sourdough. We visited the original location, but over time they’ve opened five more branches across the city. Interestingly, this flagship used to be an industrial bakery, they took over the space and completely transformed it.

We tried the pain suisse and a classic croissant. The pain suisse was super crispy, with all the puff pastry layers and a generous filling. The croissant was also excellent, made in a unique style: not light and airy like typical French croissants, but richer and denser. Of course, it depends on your preferred style, but we really enjoyed it and are always happy to try different approaches to classic pastries.

Chez Tim

 1 place du 4 septembre, 13007 Marseille

A small spot with a chalkboard menu and a few tables outside, perfect for takeaway. Simple gourmet food with international influences blended into French cuisine.

We tried the Banh Mi sandwich: poulet satay, baguette, herb mayo, pickled crudités, peanuts, and crispy fried onions. The sandwich was super creamy and flavorful, with multiple textures that created a very enjoyable mix, and the spices were bold and perfectly balanced.

Maison Journo

⚲ 28 Rue Pavillon, 13001 Marseille, France

This is truly a hidden gem in the city, a family-run spot serving Turkish cuisine. There are several desserts, but we highly recommend trying the tuna sandwich, their version of fricasse: a soft, fried Turkish bun filled with tuna, olives, and other ingredients depending on the variation. And don’t miss their homemade lemonade!

Michel Par AM

⚲ 16 Rue François Rocca, 13008 Marseille, France

This is a food truck opened by a three-Michelin-star chef, located right next to his restaurant. The menu changes every week, mixing fresh ingredients with original, unique combinations. A sweet touch? The truck is named after the chef’s grandfather, Michel, with whom he shared a deep bond. On the back of the truck, there’s a photo of him as a child with his grandfather fishing. We even did a short interview with the chef while visiting.

We tried the Carimagnola: crispy manioc, corn ragù, peppers and spinach with Malaga sauce. A bold mix of flavors we hadn’t tasted before, very green and full-bodied, with a crunchy coating and a hint of sweetness from the sauce.

Then we had the Big Brother: smoked tomato bread, sautéed mozzarella, sumac-marinated tomatoes, escarole in citrus oil, spiced eggplant caviar, spicy kimchi, and pickled radish. A super flavorful sandwich with complex tastes, varied textures, and different preparations, truly delicious.

Of course, you might not find these exact items, as the menu changes weekly, but it’s definitely worth a visit!

Tam Ky

⚲ 5 Rue Halle Delacroix, 13001 Marseille, France

In Marseille’s Asian market, there’s a family-run grocery store that also has a Vietnamese deli section! We visited and tried the bao and the Vietnamese roll. The bao was a classic Vietnamese style, filled with mushrooms, bamboo shoots, vegetables, and meat. The roll was stuffed with vegetables and rice vermicelli.

It’s a great spot to try artisanal products while wandering around. Don’t expect restaurant-level dishes, think simple, family-made, and authentic. We recommend going in the morning to find the freshest items, and it’s worth visiting for the atmosphere and overall experience.

Coquillage Claude

⚲ Rdpt de Mazargues, 13009 Marseille, France

This is the perfect spot for fresh raw seafood. They have several locations, and we visited the one most convenient for us, right on the way to the beach. We tried a mix of different oysters, mussels, shrimp, and sea urchins. Everything was fresh and delicious.

Pizza JD

⚲ Boulevard Chave, 13005 Marseille, France

A bright yellow food truck located in a non-touristy area, full of locals stopping by to order pizza from Pizza JD. The neighborhood itself is very charming. To be honest, from the photos online we were a bit unsure, it doesn’t look particularly impressive. But after tasting it: approved!

We tried the Pizza Petsu: fresh tomato, mozzarella, olives, olive oil, garlic, and a tomato base that tasted like it was mixed with pesto. Then we had the 7 Cheeses Pizza: chèvre, mozzarella, Roquefort, brousse, Parmesan, and Reblochon.

We really liked it and definitely recommend it! 🍕
