Why Fishermen Beat Octopus at Bari’s Old Harbor

We visited Bari’s old harbor to document the typical Bari breakfast. It’s an ancient spot where fishermen dock their small boats every morning, clean their fresh catch, and sell it. The tradition of eating raw fish is deeply rooted in Pugliese culture, so much so that locals here call it “Bari sushi.” If you’re lucky, you might also witness the traditional octopus beating, a technique fishermen use to tenderize the octopus meat, making it ready to be eaten raw.
